When people look at a handmade pair of trousers or a linen top, one of the first things they notice is the price and I completely understand why.

We're surrounded by clothing that's cheaper than ever. You can buy a dress for less than a takeaway, a top for less than a bottle of wine, and a whole outfit for the price of a family trip to the cinema.

But over the years, I've realised something. The most expensive clothes are often the ones you never wear.

Not the beautifully made trousers you reach for every week. Not the dress that makes you feel fantastic every summer. Not the jacket that's been hanging by the door for five years because it goes with everything.

The expensive clothes are the impulse buys.

The things that looked good in the changing room but never felt quite right when you got them home. We've all done it, I still do it and I make clothes for a living!

You've spotted something reduced, convinced yourself it's a bargain, taken it home, hung it in the wardrobe and then... nothing.
